Galindo is among the smaller communities in Austin’s 78704 area at a modest 3,500 residents, but that doesn’t mean that it lacks any of the vibrance or activity found in neighboring areas. In fact, packed within the quaint community there are plenty of great things to see and do. From parks, restaurants, entertainment venues and more, Galindo proves that great things can come in small packages.Â
Add a fantastic list of schools, gorgeous homes for sale and rent and close proximity to neighboring communities, Galindo is yet another area worth a closer look.
Location and Community:
Conveniently located along the north side of Route 290, Galindo is easily accessible for commuters and locals alike.
It also shares its eastern border with South 1st Street, along which you can find plenty of great places to eat, especially if you continue north into nearby Bouldin Creek. Further east is the neighborhood of Dawson, another smaller, quiet residential neighborhood.
South Lamar is located just west of Galindo, where you can find even more fantastic restaurants and shops
The northern border is West Oltorf Street, another great way to get back and forth between the neighborhoods. Dissecting the neighborhood and located on the southern border of the South Austin Neighborhood Park is Cumberland Road, another easy way to move about the community.
The location of Galindo puts it at a comfortable distance from Downtown Austin, but also close enough for an easy commute into the city. The community itself has a mix of an urban/suburban feel, evident especially in the small side streets dotted with mature trees and green spaces.
Amenities and More in Galindo:
In the northwest corridor of Galindo sits an 11 acre facility called the South Austin Recreation Center and South Austin Neighborhood Park. Here, locals can enjoy a host of activities such as basketball, tennis, picnicking, plus younger children also have access to their very own playground.
Located within this 11 acre plot of lush greenery is the South Austin Neighborhood Park. This is where the children’s playground is located, as are the basketball courts and tennis courts, among many other outdoor facilities. If you or your family are looking to get a different experience away from the more urban sections of town, taking a nice stroll or jog through the park might be just what you needed.Â
The Rec Center is used by residents of all ages and even provides specialized activities for certain age groups. Originally envisioned in the mid 1970’s as a place to keep local children healthy, happy and active, the South Austin Recreation Center has continued to grow and expand its list of offerings.
The Rec Center operates year round and provides camps, after-school programs, art programs, gymnastics, flag football, soccer, basketball, t-ball, volleyball and even more!
Hungry? Stay a while!
The most central parts of the neighborhood are primarily residential, so you’ll find the best restaurants, coffee shops and breweries on the outermost borders, mainly dotting South 1st Street and West Oltorf Street.Â
Luckily, moving from end to end of Galindo is quick, so reaching your favorite place to get a bite to eat won’t take you very long.Â
Not far from the South Austin Neighborhood park is Taquerias Arandas’ Mexican family restaurant that serves up deliciously authentic Mexican food items. One of several Taquerias Arandas’ locations scattered throughout Texas, this location is one you should check out the next time you’re in the mood for Mexican food.Â
Next on our list is Summer Moon Coffee. If you happen to be a caffeine addict like most Americans, you’re bound to love this coffee shop. Using only 100% organic coffee beans and a special wood-fired coffee roasting process, this isn’t your average cup o’joe.Â
In fact, Summer Moon prides itself for their unique fire roasting process. They use specially made, hand-crafted brick ovens to roast each batch of coffee beans. Part of what makes this process so important is the kind of wood that they use in the ovens, ensuring a smooth, bold and unique blend of flavors. Summer Moon Coffee uses seasoned Texas oak in their roasting ovens, a technique that they accredit as being the reason their coffee tastes so great. Top it off by adding in a little of their ‘moon milk’ sweet cream and you might never turn back.Â
Finally, resting along West Oldorf is the Austin Beer Garden Brewing Company. A perfect place to grab a bite to eat while sipping on ice cold, locally brewed beer. You might also be able to catch some live music while you’re there.Â
In fact, blending craft beer, great food and live music was the inspiration for opening ABGB Co. in the first place. Their commitment to quality is evident in everything they serve. As for their role in this tight knit community, they take pride in knowing that their brewery is a local hotspot to gather with friends and wind down.
