As with many of the man-made lakes around the City of Austin, Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake have rich histories behind them.
Lake Austin:
With roots dating back to 1890, Lake Austin was initially the result of the Austin Dam. This early man-made lake was called Lake McDonald and only survived seven years past its year of completion. After nearly four decades of dispute and delay, a new dam was constructed in 1939.
The resulting artificial lake was called Lake Austin, and today is used as a water storage area and for power generation. Working in tandem with the upstream Mansfield Dam, the Tom Miller Dam has two generators each capable of reaching a capacity of 6,750 kilowatts.
Today Lake Austin is home to motorized watercraft, pontoon boats, and smaller man-powered vehicles. It also holds plenty of waterfront restaurants and other venues. For these and other reasons, the Lake Austin area is perfect for people looking for a more active life.
Lady Bird Lake:
Closer to the heart of the City of Austin, Lady Bird Lake is one of the younger bodies of water in the Texas Highland Lake chain. Created in the 1960’s and named for the former First Lady, ‘Lady Bird’ Johnson, the lake is primarily used for recreation and flood control. Surrounding the lake is an intricate system of biking and walking trails, perfect for enjoying the views of the water while getting some exercise.聽
Lady Bird Lake is among the more tranquil spots around Austin. A great place to relax and unwind from the activity of the city, Lady Bird Lake is always home to kayaks and small fishing boats.
Life Near the Lakes:
Offering an escape from the urban jungle, the small artificial lakes linking up and down the Colorado River also provide a wonderful lifestyle. Because of the variety of landscapes and locations, there are options for every preference. Many of these areas act as respite from the growth of Austin’s more developed sections. The communities surrounding the lakes are also welcoming and offer highly rated school systems.聽
Whether you are imagining a home with a lakefront view and a dock, or something more isolated within the rolling landscape just west of the city, there is always a reason to consider living near these smaller lakes.
