Whether you’re a local looking to experience more of what your community has to offer or just passing through as a stranger, Downtown Georgetown, Texas has no shortage of places to see and experience. That goes especially for the restaurants and cafes dotting the streets of Georgetown, but some have stayed somewhat elusive over the years.Â
Hidden gems, local dives and staples of the community, the following places are definitely worth a try. That’s why, today, we’re giving you a taste of the three best hidden lunch spots in Georgetown, Texas…
Monument Cafe:
Every once in a while you encounter a place so reminiscent of times gone by that you genuinely wonder if you’ve stepped back in time. If that’s what the owners of Monument Cafe, in Georgetown, Texas were aiming for they definitely nailed it.Â
According to their own website, Monument Cafe was named after the dictionary definition of a monument? A lasting evidence, tribute, reminder or enduring example of someone or something notable or great.Â
To them, operating a cafe with the heart and soul of the Texas diners that preceded them is about more than serving simple but satisfying meals. It’s about preserving the tradition of the Texas diner, those of which used to dot the roads and highways of the ever expanding country.Â
Although many of these restaurants exist now only in memory, Monument Cafe is committed to upholding the same values and experiences that used to be so common. It’s also one of the major reasons why Monument Cafe is so proud to be one of the remaining ‘unofficial community centers’ still bringing locals together for great food and better conversation.Â
Opened in 1995, Monument Cafe is now a solid staple of the Georgetown community. With a menu consisting of breakfast and lunch options, you might actually find some menu items to be welcome surprises. A delicate blend of traditional comfort food, inventive Southern and Mexican plates and everything in between, Monument Cafe is a gathering ground for every type of food fanatic.
In addition to being a callback to simpler times of roadside cafes, Monument Cafe takes the responsibility of carrying the torch of every restaurant that came before it, and hopefully revitalizing the very theme of these restaurants itself.
Greenhouse Craft Food:
Specializing in farm-to-fork ingredients, Greenhouse Craft Food is a fast-casual restaurant with its roots dating back to 2013 in Round Rock, Texas. After experiencing success in their flagship location, Greenhouse Craft Food opened a second location in Georgetown in 2018.
Here, you can find a slightly modified and unique menu but with all of the same quality and ambiance from the original location. Both locations source their ingredients from Texas, so you know for sure that your food is made fresh and with quality ingredients. Their aim is to source from vendors who can ensure that their products are sustainably grown and free from harmful pesticides and antibiotics.
The restaurant offers two menus. One is fixed and includes all of the familiar Texas comfort food that we’re all so fond and familiar of. Another is a rotating menu where you can find weekly chef’s specials and other specialty items. Our advice is that you shouldn’t wait to try something that catches your eye on the rotating menu, because it might not stay for long. We’d hate for you to miss out?
Our final hidden lunch spot is 600 Degrees Pizza, but deciding on a pie might be a bit tougher than one might think.
600 Degrees Pizzeria:
Quick, imagine a pizza shop and try to think of as many options of pies as possible.
Ok, great. How many did you come up with? A dozen or so different pizza recipes?
Now, imagine walking into 600 Degrees Pizzeria for the first time. You look to see how many varieties they offer and are stunned to see the final count. That’s because in addition to their famous giant slices, 600 Degrees Pizzeria also offers a total of 27 different pizza varieties. Think that’s impressive? We’re just getting started?
This pizza joint does it right, using only sourdough crust made from special, naturally aged yeast and ensuring quality by using only slow-cooked pizza sauce. Although the sauce needs to simmer overnight to provide the best taste, the process is never rushed and certainly never questioned. Sometimes quality takes time, and there don’t seem to be many complaints about the final products here.
600 Degrees is also a great place just to hang out and relax while enjoying a beer and appetizers. For those who enjoy a cold beer along with a hot, fresh slice of pizza, there is an extensive beer list. With numerous different local and national IPAs and drafts, on top of each pizza option, making choices here might be the most stressful part of your visit.
So, the next time you find yourself hungry and wandering through Georgetown, remember to do yourself a favor and check out one (or all) of these spots.
